How to Unblock a Kitchen Sink in Belper and When to Stop

Most blocked kitchen sinks in Belper are caused by fat, food and limescale sitting in the first metre of pipe, and you can usually clear them yourself in under half an hour. The skill is knowing when the problem has moved beyond the cupboard under the sink. This guide covers the safe fixes and the warning signs that mean it is time to put the plunger down.

Start with the two-minute checks

Before you take anything apart, work out where the blockage is. If only the kitchen sink is slow, the problem is almost certainly in the trap or the waste pipe directly behind it. If the washing machine, dishwasher or outside gully are backing up as well, the blockage is further along and no amount of plunging at the sink will shift it.

Bail out standing water into a bucket, then try a plunger. Block the overflow with a wet cloth, and if you have a double bowl, hold the plug firmly in the other side. Give 15 to 20 sharp strokes. If the water drops away with a gurgle, run the hot tap for a minute to flush the pipe.

Clean the trap, the fix that works most often

The U-shaped or bottle trap under the sink is where most blockages sit. Put a washing-up bowl underneath, unscrew the two plastic nuts by hand and lift the trap away. Expect about half a litre of grey water and a plug of congealed fat, coffee grounds and rice.

Wash the trap out in a bucket rather than another sink, check the rubber washers are seated flat, and refit it hand tight only. Over-tightening with grips cracks the nuts and is one of the most common causes of the slow drips we find under kitchen units. Run the tap for two minutes and wipe a dry piece of kitchen roll around each joint to check for weeps.

What to avoid

Caustic drain cleaners are tempting, but they rarely dissolve a solid fat plug and they leave a sink full of corrosive liquid that you or a plumber then has to work in. Boiling water straight from the kettle can soften plastic waste fittings and loosen push-fit joints, so stick to hot tap water.

Water around Belper tends to be on the hard side, which means limescale roughens the inside of older pipes and gives grease something to grip. A monthly flush with hot water and a little washing-up liquid does more good than any chemical.

When to stop trying

Stop and get help if any of these apply. Carrying on usually turns a blockage into water damage.

Who to call in Belper

Many homes here are older stone terraces, including the mill workers' cottages around Long Row and the Clusters, where neighbours often share a drain run. If the blockage is in a shared drain or beyond your boundary, it is normally Severn Trent's responsibility and they will not charge you to clear it. A blockage within your own pipework is yours, and a local drain unblocking visit typically falls somewhere between £60 and £150 depending on access, time of day and whether jetting is needed.

If the sink drains but you are seeing damp, swollen chipboard or unexplained water, the issue is more likely a leaking waste pipe or supply pipe hidden behind the units or under the floor. That is leak detection work rather than drain clearing, and it is what we do across Belper and the Derby area, tracing the source without ripping the kitchen out first.

Common Questions

Why does my kitchen sink keep blocking every few weeks?

Repeat blockages usually mean the waste pipe has too shallow a fall, a sagging section or a heavy build-up of fat and limescale further along. Clearing the trap only treats the symptom, so the pipe run needs inspecting.

Is a blocked drain in Belper my responsibility or Severn Trent's?

Pipes that serve only your home and sit inside your boundary are yours. Shared drains and anything beyond the boundary are normally Severn Trent's, so it is worth asking neighbours whether they are affected before paying anyone.

How do I know if it is a leak rather than a blockage?

A blockage makes water back up into the bowl, while a leak lets water escape where it should not, showing as damp in the cupboard, staining on walls or a persistent musty smell. If the sink drains normally but things are still getting wet, treat it as a leak.
